Culminating 5 years of research, hapū Ngāi Tamawhariua of Te Rereatukāhia have almost completed their kāinga plan.

Executive Summary

Ngai Tamawhariua puta noa ki te Rereatukahia (Te Rereatukahia) is a coastal community. We have learned that our papakainga is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and that we will have to relocate.

This hapu-led Kainga Plan is the result of five years of work. It will be an enduring document as it looks forward 100 years into the future. The science irrefutably indicates we are already being impacted by climate change and it will only get worse. The time for action is now, because tomorrow may be too late. We have already accepted that much of our whenua will soon become uninhabitable. This was our first step. Now we understand the problem, what is the solution?

Our Kainga Plan outlines what we believe is the solution. We provide this plan for our descendants who are not yet born, ensuring that Te Rereatukahia not only survives, but flourishes for many generations to come. Globally, nationally and locally, we will all have to adapt to the impacts of climate change. We therefore share our journey so that other communities throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond, might also adapt, transition and thrive over the coming 100 years.

The plan is not yet publicly available - and can only be accessed with permission of Te Rereatukāhia marae committee.
