Waitangi and Ōromāhoe are neighbouring communities in Te Tai Tokerau and are home to the hapū of Ngāti Rāhiri, Ngāti Kawa and Te Matarahurahu of Ngāpuhi. Connected through shared whakapapa and enduring relationships with their whenua, wai and moana including the maunga Pouerua, the Waiaruhe and Waitangi rivers and the east coast, the communities have been actively advancing environmental restoration, climate adaptation and community resilience for more than a decade.

Working alongside whānau and hapū, Project Kāinga supported a series of community-led initiatives, including kōrero, wānanga, workshops, field days and research to better understand local priorities, opportunities and climate-related challenges. This work contributed to a growing evidence base that informed long-term planning for the wellbeing of people, whenua and taiao. It also provided the foundation for the Kāinga Climate Adaptation Plan and related initiatives that strengthen hapū environmental, energy, economic and social aspirations for future generations.
